Maavin Kai Sambar : eee ruchi Yaaksaar?!

Hello friends

Our MavinKai MajjigeHuli (Mango curd sambar) has created a good amount of discussions in town!! some told it is the weiredest item they have ever eaten, some complimented, some roared on us and some ommitted!! Finally, by hook or croock, our food has come to limelight!!!

We had been to Managlore store on wednesday evening to buy a very special veriety of Brinjal, called, Vaadiraaja Gulla. It is a typical coastal brinjal that comes with a rough skin. Why Vaadiraaja?? Just because it was very much liked by a Udupi Krishna Mutt monk named Sri Vaadiraaja swami. This breed of brinjaal is very much used in coastal areas like Udupi, Mangalore, kasargod, Puttur, Sulya etc. The palya prepared using this Gulla is famous and a favourite item in any festive food. We wanted to give this veriety to our customers and see their reaction.

When we went to Mlore shop just to buy Gulla, we saw a very rare item there: Boiled Mangoes! Boiled mango is an integral part of Udupi Brahmin's kitchen. They collect mangoes in monsoon, and then boil them, soak them in salt water and this soaked mangoes last for one to two years. Whenever in need, you can just take one mango out of mango jar and prepare Majjige Huli. So, you can just have mangoes in off season also! People in udupi have mango sambar in November which is not at all a time of Mangoes!

Mango majjige huli has a typical smell and it goes well with a fried masala mirchi. Majjige huli will be served in every Udupi Aduge program. If the young girls don't know how to prepare it, their grannies will teach them and thus pass the traditional skills to the next generations. "Take one mango, smash it in curd, add a pinch of salt, put tharka and asifotida, the curd sambar is ready!", explains the granny to her grandchild in kitchen. Boiled mango curd sambar is liked and loved by every family in Coastal Karnataka.

When we saw boiled mangoes in NRColony shop, we felt alllll these... and we felt great! (Once, A K Ramanujan saw corrieander leaves in Chicago market, it seems!) We thought we will give this different special food to our beloved customers! We bought one full pack of mangoes. Gave right instructions to our cook to prepare the best majjige huli in the world... and he tooo liked the idea very much since he is near to coastal Karnataka.

Finally, on Thursday, our Majjige Huli was ready. We got the first compliments from our office boy. "What saar!! Is this sambar or some Khachda phinoil?? Whattta bad smell! I don't prepare the boxes", he told. We felt it is a waste of time to explain the cultural, geographical, historical and traditional richness of this majjige huli to this poor fellow.. (Kattegenu gottu kasturi parimala!!). We prepared all lunch boxes with atmost care. Prepared every box as if we were preparing our child to school. Finally we sent all boxes with lotta expectations....

You might have seen Kylie Kwong or Nigella or Bobby Chinn preparing the weiredest items and crunching and munching them with lot of love. Kylie Kwong in her program, "My China" goes around China and finds some typical items. The way she prepares food is almost like a mad philosopher doing some experiments in Bio-chemistry lab. But, finally she takes a platefull of items in her hand and using two chopsticks, eats every bit of it with a Bigg smile. If this can happen in China and can be telecasted to the entire world, why can't be our Majjige Huli??? So, we dared to do this item. We did it and sent it and now, we were ready for results. We were waiting, as a student waiting for resluts after exams, for our customers to give some good compliments..

And finally, around 2, we got a call from Ms.Chitra, a regular customer..

"hello, sakkatalva..?"

"yes, ma'm."

"Ok.. I had your lunch just now... and today the food was very different"

(we were overjoyed. We were expecting this since we had sent our boxes...) "Oh, is it so..."

"Yes yes, the food was very typical. espically, majjige huli..."

(Now, we were in cloud nine.... Oh God! She is talking about our majjiege huli! Our beloved mango sambar!!)

"enri adu, Sambaara?? Kalagacchu thara ittalri! Ootaane maadakkagilla. Nammejamanrantoo nange ugudu uppin kai haakidru!"

:(

After that Mr.Abhishek called at 2.30. He is a northy, working in an IT company. That day he had ordered South just to see what is "mango curd sambar"! No need to say you that he made a Panchamruta Abhisheka on us..

But on the other hand, Mr. Amar had seen his mama's skills in our majjige huli. He was almost jumping in joy after having our sambar. "what man! Typical mangalore man!! I liked it man, very much man!!" he shouted and we too felt satisfied. Whereas, the customer next to him showed a grim face, gave a weired look and put his thumbs down for our great preparation.

Ms.Pallavi from an IT company, who places bulk orders everyday, gave a call in the evening and asked what on the earth was that majjige huli! "Tomorrow onwards, please inform us well in advance if you people are preparing this kind of thing. we will not order at all!!", she roared. Mr.Jagadhish Achar, a typical brahmin from Puttur had called us to enquire whether we can provide the same food as dinner also...

The whole day, our great huli sambar created a lot of discussions. Many people liked it, some people told a big No No to it, some told it is nice, some yelled on us. We too had a mixture of feelings. Were confused whether to experiment on our customers with different verieties of contemporary foods or to give a typical hotel sambar...

Our genie Ganesh, the next day morning (today) after collecting the empty tiffin carriers from our one new customer, told: "Sir, last night I delivered the food to one new customer, right? He gave tiffin boxes today morning. His wife did not like the food itseems, saar!"

His face was dull, pale and not happy. One could make out that he was very upset. We forced him to tell what happened with that customer. We had given two big mango seeds (Gorate) too in our Sambar to this customer!

he said, "she had continous ommitting after having our Sambar, itseems, sir!"

:(

Can one get a better compliment to one's food than this????

FunFood with Love: Happy & @#%

Hi friends

Itz been very long since we have sat for chatting! When we started this venture, we had plans of updating this blog every day... But, the venture has taken us soo long that we can't even think of writting something here even once a week! anyways, "NO TIME" should not be the reason for anything!!

How are you foodies? hwz life? enjoying our food or cursing us every time? feel free to write to us so that we can cater according to your wish..

The things are goin in right way in right path. We are happy that atleast 95% of our customers are happy with our gr8 food. A lot of parties have been arranged, a lotta new customers, lotta fresh orders.. Our team is Khush n we hope our customers too Khush. JaI hO!

And in these days, we had a very good number of funny moments too.. wanna share one of those with you.

It was July 2. We were, as usual, busy with our food carriers. And around 3, we gotta call. The voice was sweet, but not a familiar one. It said, "See, this is funny, but serious. We have arranged a party. J.P.Nagar itself. around 20 guys. want very very funky food. Game?" And we were game!
for two reasons. Firstly, it was the first party order for us. So we were a bit excited. Secondly, they wanted funky food. We too were bored with our rice, rasam, sambar and wanted to test something new n fresh.. We, at once, agreed! And the party was just that night itself. We were excited, worried, happy n perplexed. Took it as a challenge. We prepared the menu: Babycorn Manchow fry, French fry dipped in strabery creamy sauce, steamed rice cake with saahi paneer, baby potato stir fry with australian pepper and lastly, A big lovely Black forest cake! The menu was funkiest enough to thrill our customers!

The great mistery was that we did not know what the vaccation was that and our customers told "It is a secret, do serve as we order!!" when we asked about it. We had to run around for collecting items, guiding our chefs about food, packing with extra care... and finally we were ready to serve at 7.

In between we had two calls from our customers enquiring about the status. We briefed them about what was goin on, but were kept in dark completely about their identity. We were in a confused state but still wanted to give a try. Lastly, we left to their place at 7.15.. The party was about get started at 7.30..

The customers had given only a landmark but not had given any particular address. We had almost forced them to give the complete address, but they had denied. The voice had told us not to worry about the address but to concentrate on preparing food. We had followed their instructions promptly though we were not happy about it. And now we had to ask their address, otherwise, we were ready to go back home!!

The voice over phone asked us go left, come right, take a cross, move further, come back.... and we were completely LOST!! The voice told us to stop finally and we were almost dead!! Now we stopped infront of a house. It was a good, old but artistic house. Though it was at the centre of the town, it was calm n cool. we liked the place for its peaceful atmosphere. A tall slim guy with blue striped T-shirt, an yellow-pink scarf and a maroon jeans was waiting to welcome us with a cute smile. "Hi, Im Ajay.. Im extremely sorry if you struggled to find this place. Sorry for not telling you the address earlier. It was inevitable. Sorry..", he added. He took us to the house and we could easily make out that the party was on its high. Loud music, colourful ribbons, balloons, shouting, laughing and many more... we could understand that some great celebration was goin on. We just stepped in and there was a big loud clap.. All of them shouted with chorus: "JaI hO!!"

The party was in full swing. Jovial. Loud. colourful. We could see seven colours everywhere. The news reader was shouting in TV about the new verdict. Channels were showing some great people like Selina Jaitely, Rahul Gandhi, Baba Ramdev, Ambika Soni, Rohit Bal, Sharukh, Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Manoviraj Khosla and many more romeos of this planet..... People were celbrating. We were perplexed. The group turned to us and shouted with claps: "SAKKAT.... JaI hO".

And later there were some formalities. We handed over the food. The guys were friendly and helpful in every sense. They offered some drinks. We liked the chill beer in that hot party.. Left the place at 8.

The party was very sweet n remebering one. It was the topic of our talk while driving back home. We were very happy and satisfied for giving a good, perhaps best?, food to our customers.. while driving back home, we were tired and exhausted.

Reached home at 10.30. Our favorite TIMES NOW had organised a debate on some hot topic in that cold night. Same Selina, same Baba, same Moulvi showed their faces. Bible, Khuran and BhagavadGeetha came in discussion. Some clippings of celebrations were shown. Seven colour flag was waved here n there... Everywere, everyone was asking the big question: "Is it legal, or illegal? right or wrong? Indian or western? what what what? what is the answer boss??"

They were still debating. Got bored of this meaningless endless talkshows, we switched off the TV...

and finally, saluted Delhi Highcourt for giving our first party customer and went to bed... ;)

Eee Naraka Eee Pulaka

Hi friends

Finally SAKKAT is launched! we started operating on 01 June.. We don't want to discuss the hassles, problems and challenges that we had faced and that we had to face! This place is to talk something good and funny. So, why remembering worries!

It was our great dream to start this venture. We wanted to give the best, perhaps the best food of our sweet Bengaluru. But, the first day was a complete mess! We never expected that the responce would be soo spontaneous and fast.

First day we could serve only 16 customers and all of them roared on us for being late and serving cold food! Mrs. Pushpa waited almost one hour for our "Great" food and we had no face to face her!! Mrs. Ranjana was in dilemma whether to wait for some more time for our "hot" food or turn the stove on! Mr. Amar was completely confused with our "North" indian food and asked us whether it is really north!! And Mr.Vaibhav told us he is from Delhi and never had a "delhi" food like this!!!

It was a complete messy show to start with. There was no power for sometime, so we had to run around to arrange the candles. We thought of preparing chapathi with big stoves and later learnt that the stove is really "big" to manage. We did not know how to arrange the tiffin boxes properly and foremost, we went to deliver the food being completely strangers to JP nagar! Our experiments were more like a child's play in chemistry lab or you can say, a soldier's march in KR Market!

Finally we managed to serve our SAKKAT bisi food at 9.30 after one hour the orderes had been placed. Our first day customers were soooo generous to pardon us. Mr. Vishaal, with a deep breathe, told "hotha hey yaar"!

Finally, we went to bed at aaround 11.30 having a lot of tension and pressure within and we were wondering whether we really get any sleep! SAKKAT: a dream had turned to be a nightmare!

But, as days have passed, the work has become simpler. We have hired a lot of people now.. serving a lot of people, the real hot food. Now a days, the phone starts ringing at morning 7 and the work goes on and on and on till late night. Over phone, some voices are regular, some are very friendly, some are strange, some are doubtful! We do our job: take the order, prepare the carriers, serve them.. We want to spread joy. We want to see the happiness on our customers' faces. We want them to be satisfied, completely.

Now guys are calling us not to give toooo much! Mr. Harsha called us yesterday and shouted on us: "Are you cracks??? Why are you giving sooo much? How do i finish yar? Im alone here!!" Mrs. Anjali ringed us up to tell us we mistakenly kept a nice key chain in her food carrier! We explained her about our SurPrize offer and we could make out by her voice, that she was SurPrized! "Oh God! is it so!! So nice!" were her words and after that she was speechless. Mr. Ashok called from 6th phase, saying "Dude, really good! I wanna order 3 more thalis. Right NOW!" Mr. Salil from Yarab nagar, over phone, was saying: "hey guys, please serve food for me! Plz. Here no good food service around, Im dying yar!"

We are overjoyed... The responce and support that we have got is really amazing. People are appreciating, people are encouraging, patting our back, wishing good luck, and what we need more!

Friends, keep in touch. keep writing to us. Sakkat food Sakkat enjoy maadi!
